I saw most of the entries and they're very impressive. I can't wait to see some of them made into a theme soon.

Aren't you aware that there's a mockup contest going on? :)
We closed down the site so we can focus on readying everything. We don't want MT to go cold because we're not expecting much theme news/updates during the contest

Yeah but for a good reason :) We want to make the transition to new design a smooth one instead of changing it unexpectedly.
