MacThemes.net - New Site Design

MacThemes.net - New Site Design
They're finished except for the white paper on the top of wood box. I'll think of something to put on that card soon. Maybe a vote check list with two contenders: Aqua and Luna :)

When the contest is over, the site will revert back to old design but it looks so dull comparing to the new one. I'm going to try and improve the old one by adding subtle textures, etc.

4 days and counting.

I saw most of the entries and they're very impressive. I can't wait to see some of them made into a theme soon.

MacThemes.net Theme Mockup Contest

Only 7 days left. Stretch your photoshop muscle and build a mockup to submit! The prizes are very impressive if you ask me.

Instruction on partipicating in the contest can be found here

For those who doesn't know, I'm a staff at MacThemes.net as a web/graphic designer

This week will be pretty busy for me since I'll need to create trophy/award graphics, formatting the theme entries and redesign the site to feature Ballot Theme. You'll see soon :)

Edit: Some people asked if Windows users are allowed to partipicate, yes they are. It doesn't matter what OS you're on now as long as mockup will follow OS X guidelines

Photoshop Tip of the Week: Trim

Uncropped DocumentSo you want to perfectly crop the document without damaging the graphics or transparency mask?

Meet Trim. She'll be your official haircutter. She can trim away blank areas on top, bottom, left or right. The image isn't transparency? No problem, she has experiences in trimming away plain color. Textured background, on the other hand, is out of her résumé.

Trim Dialog1. Choose Image > Trim

2. In the Trim dialog box, choose either:

• Transparent Pixels: If there is no background image, use this one

Cropped Document• Top Left / Bottom Right Pixel Color: If there is a background image in any of the colors, use this one. Top Left / Bottom Right are options to let you decide which corner to use as a start point for trimming

3. If you don't want to trim one or more of the sides, unselect the checkboxes in Trim Away.

Your document is now perfectly cropped up. No more wasted space and file size

Flag Screensavers 3

Australia Flag Screensaver - US
Palestinian Flag Screensaver
Venezuela Flag Screensaver
Italy Flag Screensaver
and a flag to support their rich and delicious oil...
Iraq Flag Screensaver

British, South Africa, Dutch, Argentina, Malaysia, Russia, Puerto Rican, Slovakian, Finland and Cuba will be in next update.

One thing I'm curious about is why is there a flag of British in Australia flag? Is Australia owned by British?

Bandwidth Limit Exceeded

I'm really sorry about the site being down yesterday and today. The bandwidth exceeded 10GB in three days.

I'm not exactly happy with the way my host provider treated me though. I thought it was a little unprofessional but I'll not discuss about that right now.

In the meantime, anyone have better recommendations for host provider?

Maker of iPod Commercials Interviewed

"VFXSoup: Blue screen or green screen?

Alex: I'm a green screen kind of a guy. Green has a much higher luminance than blue, so it's much more forgiving for lighting and exposure. I don't know why more fx supervisors don't insist on it - it would make their lives a lot easier. Blue screen tends to suffer in the shadows around the feet. If the blue screen gets too dark, you'll end up waging war in the blacks and your comps will look like bad holograms (think R2D2 + restraining bolt = "help me obi-wan"). As far as I know, blue and green cost the same! The only drawback with green is that it does tend to show the dirt more - but there are always those natty little elastic shoe covers - very chic."

Read the Interview

Edit: They seem to have removed all photos and refer to iPod and iPod commercials. No idea why

Pretty interesting to see what techniques he used to make iPod commercials. I really don't understand why some major production companies such as Industrial Light & Magic still prefer to use blue screen over green. Two leading digital productions companies; WETA Workshop (LOTR) and Manex Enterainment (Matrix) prefer green screen because it gives depth to objects while blue screen make objects feel too flat (ie: Star Wars Ep. 1/2).

Industrial Light & Magic haven't made any breakthrough in technology lately though. The effects in Hulk, Harry Potter, etc are not that well-done, IMO.

Flag Screensavers 2

Flag Screensaver - US
Flag Screensaver - Apple
Flag Screensaver - Iceland
Flag Screensaver - Panther

Australia, Palestinian, Venezuela, and Italy will be in next update. Venezuela is taking a little longer than expected because of the complexness of image logo at top-left. I'll hold that one for next update.

The rest will come in after that. Should I do a flag for Saddam's ex-home? How about a flag of his beautifully bearded face?

Flag Screensaver - Canada

Flag Screensaver - Canada
Want an OS X Screensaver to show how proud you are of your homeland?

Download O' Canada Screensaver

Currently, the only available flag is Canada. US version will come soon (sidenote: I'm a proud resident of US but for some twisted reasons, I decided to do Canada one first :)...)

If you would like me to make any other flags, post it in the comment.

Based on Old Glory Screensaver.

Self-Critique: Wood Signs Icon Set

Note: Self-Critique will be posted every once in several months. The reason why I decided to do this is to encourage myself to step back and take a view at my work in different perspective. That way, I will be able to take a look at my mistakes and try to understand why they did not work. So, I can learn from them and try to improve my future designs. It is not only for me, but it is also an opportunity for you to learn from my mistakes and avoid making them in the future.

In each self-critique post, there will be a list of problems and solutions included with comparison screenshot (old against new). Even though this is a self-critique, you are more than welcome to post your own critiques and feedbacks.

Wood Signs Icon Set - Feb. 2002:

• Way over-detailed
• Poorly done 32x32 and 16x16 icons
• Bad Shadows

Way over-detailed

Icon DetailsWhat did I do wrong:

I tried to make the icon as detailed as possible because I thought it would help icon to look more detailed in smaller size but it did not. It made the icon to be messy.

The Art of Adam Betts Weblog Launched

Come in and fire away your comment/feedback about the new weblog

While we're at it, do you know any of great graphic arts weblog? My blog bookmark is just dying to know some more.

Edit: For Windows Internet Explorer users, I'm looking into "fixing" the site so it will render correctly on IE Win. But IMO, applying a hack to get it to work in all browsers is just as same as adding breast implants to a perfectly good boobies in order to attract all kind of men.

In short: clean code (and non-implanted boobies) rules.

Application and Toolbar Icon for Freshly Squeezed Software

This is definitely the longest icon project I've been in. The long length on designing application icon was mainly my fault because of the difficulty in coming up with a good design for this kind of application without using cliché designs. After submitting several different designs, Erik was finally satisfied with the last design and I think I agree with him. Some of the early designs were either weak or odd. PF Toolbar Icons, on the other hands, took only one week to finish.

If you want to see the process from several drafts to several submitted designs to final design, you can check them at NSLog(); (For those who don't know, NSLog is a weblog by Erik at Freshly Squeezed Software):
