One thing I’m curious about is why is there a flag of British in Australia flag? Is Australia owned by British?
Ok, I’ll answer you Australia question. Australia was used as a penal colony by the British during the imperial days.
Australia used England’s flag.
The colors stem from the British Navy- the USA, Canada, New Zealand and Bermuda also get their colors from them- see this post…

Yeah Australia is still under the commonwealth which means we still have a queen. But she has nothing to do with the country what so ever. The british part in our flag is the Union Jack. More britmania from 200 years ago.

Hi… such a great work… please, would you make a venezuelan flag withoutthe stars and symbols, because im Ecuadorian and the flag has the same colors but different symbol… i do not ask for the symbol because it would be to much, and also it could be used as a colombian one… thanks

The Union Jack is in Australian flag because their original national flasg was the Union Jack. This stems from when Captain Cook first discovered Australia and some of the first colonies to settle there were British. Then in 1900, the Australia government held a competition to design a national flag of their own, with the rule by the judges that it had to contain the British ensign….which Queen Elizabeth endorsed. So they still have links with the British Monarchy.

You will find a union jack on many countries of the commonwealth’s flags. It basically just represents heritage.

The Union Jack appears in other people’s flags because we used to rule ‘everything’. Now we’re just a bit crap ;)

Are you going to do a European Union flag? Obviously that would please a lot of people. It would be especially popular at the moment because of the new countries that have just joined!
I too have trouble when more than one of these is installed. One of them takes over the others for some reason. It seems to be okay after a restart, but at the moment all four of my installed flags are “Old Italy”.

We have the Union Jack (British flag) on the top lefthand side of our flag (Australian flag) for the same reason Hawaii (an American state) has the British flag on the same top lefthand side of its flag!!!

Sorry, but it is not “Englands flag”, it is the Union flag, which represents the whole of the UK, including Northern Ireland.
The only country no represented is Wales, even the cross of St Patrick is in the flag.
The flag actually belongs to the royal family, and not the British government, there have been a couple of royal decrees down the years allowing the “people” to use the flag, but it is not an official flag, there is no such flag in the UK, its just assumed that the Union flag is the official one, technically its not.
The English flag is the Cross of St George.

Actually, Queen Elizabeth II is Head of State for Australia, the same goes for 15 other countries. Britain used to own Australia as part of the Empire, the Union flag has been there since we started claiming the land. It began as a penal colony for inprisonment, but changed to become a wealthy colony where many people started new lives, started settlements and grew farms. Eventually, it had its independance somewhere between WWI and WWII and now she is a free country, part of the British commonwealth mind. In effect, Britain created Australia.

Australia was a British dominion till just after WWII. Effectively an independent nation with substantial loyalty to Britain.
True independence came around the the 1960′s when Britain’s High Court was finally removed as the final court of appeal.
We still retain the Queen as monarch, but not as the English monarch, her title is the Queen of Australia. This subtlety is because we have not been able to agree (yet) on a form for a republic. The role of a president is filled by the Governor General (the locally appointed Queen’s representative who in effect acts as the Queen, with only lip service to her role).

That is even more odd, considering that the USA stole those Islands fair and square from Britain long ago.
btw Not many Americans know that Astralia became the dumping ground for British convicts after the USA got its independence and Britain could no longer dump them there.
We don’t mind. It turned into the best, inadvertent rehabilitation schemes ever. Looking at the final results, we must have got the more level-headed and less gun crazy convicts s:-)
