Is your Dock getting a little too messy and confusing? If so, grab this dock dividers and organize right away!
Update & Credit: Thanks to Will Lesieutre for turning the divider into applescript that does nothing when you accidentally click on it. All divider graphics are now updated to use this applescript as a base app.
I tried to use the Instructions file (included with the download) to put one of these nifty little dividers on the right (folder/file) side of the app bar but it didn’t seem to want to move as suggested. However, I found another ‘solution.’ In case anyone else is interested, here’s what I did:
1) {optional} I copied the dividers to /library/icons so I’d know where to find them in the future
2) I clicked the divider I wanted to use
3) I hit command+c to copy
4) I hit command+v to paste and a new file with the word “copy” in the file name appears
5) I clicked on the new file, for me “White Dots copy”
6) I hit command+i to open the Get Info pane
7) I clicked on the right arrow next to “Name & Extension:” to open that field
8) I changed the name of the file from “White Dots copy.app” to “WD file.rtf” — any name you like will work BUT you need to change “.app” to “.rtf” to change it from an application to a file. (I’m sure there are many other extensions that would work as well, but this was my first guess.)
9) I closed the Get Info pane
10) The message “Are you sure you want to change the extension from ‘.app’ to ‘.rtf’?”
11) I clicked “Use .rtf” to accept the change
12) Last, I clicked the new icon (WD file.rtf) to the place I wanted it to sit on my Dock and viola! I have a new divider on the right (file/folder) of the dock.
BTW, I’m running OS X v10.2.8 — I don’t know exactly how Docks behave differently on different flavors of OS X.
I downloaded these dockdividers and when unzipped, all I get in the new folder is a link to this website and the readme. No dividers in the folder at all. Am I doing something wrong? Any help would be greatful. Thanks.
Hmm odd, what OS version are you on right now and which software did you use to unzip the file?
Hey Adam,
I am using OS 10.4.7 and when unzipping I am using Stuffit Expander. Sometimes the unzipped file has nothing in it. Other times it has the things I listed before. Should I be using a different software for unzipping?? Thanks.
Here’s a zip version instead of .sit:

Try it with OS X’s built-in compression/uncompression app BOMArchiver and see if it worked better.
I don’t use Stuffit anymore now, it’s all zip for me.
Thanks alot Adam. That worked perfectly. Thanks for your time.
Is there a way to put the dividers in the dock without the name of the divider type showing when you mouse over it? Just curious, love the way they make the dock look.
Lee, you can make them to not show up by just entering space as a file name. Drag the renamed file to Dock and they shouldn’t show any name when hovering over them.
Hey thanks, I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.
Make the divider app non-executable and it won’t even try to launch if cllicking on it accidentally. Just a single bounce and nothing more.
In terminal:
chmod -x “Black dots.app”
Thank you good sir!
adam,
these things are great! i was actually just thinking the other day about how i wish all my icons weren’t all crammed together and that i could have some sort of separation for programs and what not… you came to the rescue!!
thanks!
kim
Cool, these are nice.
Thanks, Adam. Weird, it took me 3 years to find these. Guess I wasn’t looking hard enough. These look great. Regards.
I like this site, (found you on digg), I had to figure out your fade at the top of the scrolling side of your page. Cool (fixed layer with a png24 graphic) is my guess. Good Luck.
Such a simple idea, but so nice to have.
thank you!
Thanks, these are great. I had found one vertical one but this is perfect.
Why does the get info on the app list it as classic? Is there a reason?
Sounds great but it didn’t work for me, I still see generic app icon.
Any tips ?
Regards
Joao Correia
it says that my computer does not support the application, what should i do?
hmmm I get an erroir ‘The Application “Black Bar” cannot be launched. -10661’ whenI click on the “applet”… OSX 10.4.8 on a 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 with 1GB Ram
Hey Adam.
I can´t get this to work. I can only see application icons. And nothing happens when I drop them to the document area of the dock.
I´m running 10.4.8 on a 2.3Ghz G5
Howdy, Adam! I love this idea, and would be grateful if you would consider distributing these as updated applets for Mac OS X. Since they are Classic applets, which can’t run on an Intel Mac, they all get a generic “you can’t run this” icon instead of showing the correct icon that you’ve designed.
Adam,
Are you using Stuffit to create your .zip archives? I think my old, outdated version of Expander can’t unarchive your files correctly. Now I have to give my name and email to Stuffit in order to get the new Expander. I’m not too excited about that, but I really want to use these dividers.
Is there a reason you do not use the built-in OSX .zip archiver?
Great stuff though. Looks great. Thanks.
Very nice idea, this has helped me in my productivity ten fold!
great work. one question, though. I have LOTS of icons in the bar, so nine was not really enough. Do you think i can use more (if I put one more – even after i download another set of dividers) it removes one other.
thanks for you replies!
Fantastic app….. thank you!
can i use your app with mac osx 10.3.9 if not where can I get some dock dividers
I’ve tried a few times to use these… one tip, DO NOT USE STUFFIT to unzip them, i used BOMarchive just now and it the icons are now visible, great work chief.
looking for a way to organize my dock in two rows, since i have plenty of programms i’d like to see in the dock – is there any app that could perform this?
wow.
NICE-looking homepage! Really classy-looking. One of the very best-looking, most easy-on-the-eyes sites I’ve ever seen.
I’m here for your dock dividers. THANKYA! I’ve yet to install them, but I know their inclusion into my bloated dock icons list will be appreciated by myself DAILY.
Hey…. Adam…. I really like the reflective effect on your page’s titling. Sometime, how ’bout including on your homepage a link to a page containing instructions on just how to do that (probably in P-Shop, eh?) I haven’t checked into your “Tutorials” link yet though. Perhaps what I’m looking for is in there…
Thanks for making the dock dividers, Adam and having them available to everyone for free.
Good job…..

Thanks for these!
So good!!! Thank you! :D There are so many great choices for doc design in your folder that I couldn’t even decide which one to use and it was sooo simple to use. Nice one!
