Icon Replacement for Adobe Photoshop CS3 Beta.
Apparently the current icon for PS CS3 beta is final and will not change for release according to a brief email I got from one nice Adobe staff. So I asked PS CS3 to put some pixels together to make a temporary icon, she agreed.
I love PS 7 icon for its eye and len but I also love PS CS1/2 icons for its simplicity so why not merge them both together with Photoshop CS3′s blue background color.
Also included is a PS CS3 document icon.
Adobe should just hire you right now.
Nice work, what’d you make it in?
a jpeg would be nice, just to preview it.
Thank you sooo much!
Adam, you are the king. That is such a beautiful icon, and perfectly within the spirit of Photoshop icons past, yet looking forward and up. The eye even looks eager!
I shall refrain from commenting on the original, crummy icon, except to note that it would be a much better icon for Photoshop Elements, because it looks like it’s a square from the periodic table.
Vastly superior to CS2 and the current CS3 beta!
They can’t be serious with the current icon.
P.S. Open us CS3 (control + the CS3 icon and open the package) There is a file called Mascot.tif
What is that all about?
I think this is wonderful. Sometimes I think to myself, “what did I do without this website?” Yes yes I am a fan!! God bless you every one!
nice, but could you make the gloss less harsh? :)
Sure, file updated with slightly less gloss. Redownload and you should get updated one.
First off, I can’t believe that would be the new icon. Personally… it’s just horrible. It doesn’t convey in any way what kind of app it is, and it’s a frikin square with two letters in it. For an art application.
Second off, the new temp icon is definitely an improvement. Personally though, the eye/glass isn’t really working for me. I think the clever colorful feathers were the best icons in the photoshop icon series. Only a personal thought, though.
Excellent work. This should be official.
If the ugly blue square is the real final icon, whoever approved it must’ve gotten hit in the head. I can’t stand the file icon either. They’re functional, but, eeeeeeeeeeeh.
funny… as a graphic designer i absolutely love the new adobe icon for its simplicity and professionalism. It feels more solid and refined than the traditionnal PS icon which didn’t represent the app at all, IMO…
Adam, mind making a Illustrator version as well :)
It’s final?! Wow. Horrible, just horrible.
Thanks for making a replacement.
Thank you! You just saved me and my dock much agony.
surplomb, I totally agree with you.
Hey adam, I’ve been struggling to install PS CS3 on mac OSX. Any chance of a quick guide?
I must admit I kind like their icon – nice and simple.
Any chance of a replacement for Adobe Bridge? Thanks Adam. Oh, and awesome work on the replacement!
Cheers mate
I do like the new splashscreens of the adobe CS3 apps (Acrobat, Photoshop, Bridge) but the icons are horrible indeed.
But I don’t like your replacement either. I think you already showed us many times that you can do a better job. What about designing one from scratch (Bridge and Acrobat inluded)
I don’t know what’s the matter with adobe and icons. I really liked the CS2 icons, since they were really artistic. I once read a making of. The icons and splashsreens are based on x-rays of leafs and feathers. Now look at CS3 and Lighroom. Horrilbe!! What about a Lightroom replacement? :)
btw: Br is the Bromine on the periodic table.
WOW
this is impressive, my dock is balanced again!
and I agree with Shapaz, Adobe should hire you

Awesome icon….much, MUCH better. I would also like to see a Bridge and/or Reader icon based off your PS CS3 design when you get a chance.
Thanks Adam, as always, for making things better.
I was a little bit surprised to see their icon, but I’ve gotten used to it, I’m willing to ignore poor icon choice for much increase performance. I was struggling with CS2 on my macpro, but now it’s faster than ever! I think it has something to do with the utilization of the gpu’s an all of the memory.
This may sound like a real stupid question, but how do I go about replacing the icon? The new one is much better than the beta icon, but I can’t figure out how to replace it. Thanks in advance.

As you can see in the above picture, your replacement icon isn’t sitting well in my dock, it’s a bit too low in comparison to the other icons. Could you possibly raise it at least a few pixels? Thank you in advance.
Dewey, you can right-click on app icon and Show Package Contents then go to Contents > Resources and put the replacement files there.
Nico, I didn’t like it being low too but I opted to keep it low to match other CS 1 and 2 app icons which majority still have in their dock along with Photoshop. It’ll look odd if CS3 icon is higher than others.
I’ve added higher version in the same file above though. You can redownload the file and you’ll see two different versions of icon you can pick.
Wonderful! But can you also make a replacement PS3 splash screen?
According to the rumour mill, it looks like ImageReady is indeed getting axed (it’s about time).

Thank God! Even as a placeholder, that icon was unacceptable. You should be making big money from adobe for this icon!
Woah! And that’s a FINAL icon? I can’t even express how horrified I am… I have no professional experience, and I could have made that icon in about five seconds.
Very nicely done. No more ‘blue block’ messing with my dock’s feng shui. I am at peace once more. :)
I’m a big typography fan and I love the simplicity of the icon. It’s a little more web 2.0 for me but moving to typography is a nice switch for the nature inspired icons.
That aside your icon is a nice balance of both old and new.
I will be honest and say that I absolutely love the feather, and as such, greatly prefer Iiro Jäppinen’s feathers available at MacThemes. I always appreciate your efforts and original ideas, however, and definitely use your various other works.
I’d be in love if you found a way to either make a consistent set or played at the very least with the feather. I guess I’m just obsessive and addicted to little images, etc.
Same as kyle, I like the little boy’s eye but I prefer the feather.
That’s the only good icon in CS2 for me (ok the butterfly is not so bad, but well the Illustrator flower…).
For the new icon I bet the Macromedia’s letter method won. They should, at least, have made some nice borders rather than this huge block.
Anyway I feel a bit uncomfortable with your icon. I like it but… Maybe it’s the part of the background blending to grey. Maybe the blurry part or how the lens circle is “broken”.
All the icons in CS3 are getting this treatment: solid unique colors, plus large letters reminiscent of the periodic table. It takes some time to get used to, but when switching between apps, it makes it a lot easier to identify them quickly. Everything from Photoshop to Fireworks 9 and Dreamweaver will get these icons.
Thanks Adam!
Thing is: the CS3 icons ain’t got no soul. But we do need soul!

Your work is seriously incredible and I love the fact that you take redesigning icons and GUIs onto yourself. I really like the new iTunes icon you came up with as i really don’t like the harshness of the current version and as for your new PS icon… Beautiful. The question I have for you is for e.g. the iTunes icon, did you redesign that from scratch or simply alter the music note?
Seriously…what would it take to have you redesign the Adobe Lightroom icon?
It’s 100 times worse than the new PS3 icon.
Wow, this is gorgeous! Their new “block” icons are, in short, awful. I’m glad you made this :-)
This is just an editted version of the PS7 icon.
Make something original
Adam! How about a Photoshop CS3 icon that looks like one (or two) of the feathers in Adium’s Appearance toolbar icon? I think it’d be pretty cool. :D
Jeff, what about you make something original, instead of using an icon made but someone else? Adam, thanks, I’m very grateful, icons are not a matter of life and death, of course, but still you saved my slick-looking and (until now) uncustomized dock! Muchas gracias senor!
Why don’t you make one for illustrtor and indesign too? That’ll be nice!!
Better than hiring him, they should hire and pay him for freely distributing these icons that make CS3 worthy of our docks again!
Please offer it to Adobe ^____^, actually their logo looks like a joke -.-
Im going to download the gimp, hmm, not
guyz, i downloaded the zip file.. but i dont see any icons.. do i need to download any tool to view them?
Oh man, nothing personal, but this icon is bad, as in “really bad”. Poorly cut out, a poor fading, and hey, since when are faces glossy?
Now the new Adobe icon lineup is great, because it’s functional, you don’t have to check if there’s a flower or a butterfly to click the right one. Colorcoding and abbreviations (periodic table reference is excellent too) are a nice trick (stolen from Macromedia though). I hope you won’t try and redesign the Macromedia icons by Neville Brody ;) Just my $0.02.
The looking glass is not modern anymore. I prefer the feather instead.
Do you have a larger version of this logo. It is great and I want to show it to my students… I teach Photoshop at Sacramento City College… been there 38 years… carl winther
great website, thanks for all the inspiration
Adam – beautiful icon that captures the spirit of Photoshop – I’m using it with Photoshop 7 and Rocketdock in Windows XP. Thank you.
How do i install this new icon Sir?
Nice work. Do you have a larger version of this icon? I´m not a hero painting programs…
