Photoshop 3.0 to CS3 Beta Icons
An interesting icon change for CS3.
I’m going to say it calmly; I certainly hope it is not the final icon design.

Well if it is, you can always make a replacement icon for us poor souls, right? ;)
Agreed, it looks like an element off of the periodic table… It doesn’t seem to convey any purpose whatsoever. My best guess, if I had no prior knowledge, would be a science app.
Photoshop will always be the version 4.0 icon for me, even if I was a heavy user long before that. I really liked the concept behind the CS1 and CS2′s though. That CS3 icon must be temporarily, because it’s nothing. How does the one for Illustrator look? “Il”? :)
It’s probably temporary… although the final very well might have the blue gradient (or at least the gradient in some color), since Adobe Reader now has an icon with the same sort of gradient…
Frankly, I don’t find it repulsive. I rather like the blue (it’s growing on me). I don’t really find any of them that appealing (a feather over a white chiclet just doesn’t do it for me).
Whatever they do, they have already won me over with the professional changes to the UI. I would still love to see a “snap back” to 100% viewing, but don’t see it happening. Still, I am still very impressed with the changes thus far.
If this is the final one I hope, like Andre, you’ll save us from it’s uglyness.
I actually like it.
The feathers on the white squares were stupid and just as confusing. This one at least has the name in it.
Hey Adam, can you make us a better icon for the beta version. I hate the Ps looks stuping in the dock with all my other adobe apps.
I think they need to go back to the eye in some way. Call me old school, but Venus and the eye ARE Illustrator and Photoshop.
The feather is meaningless.
This icon is driving me crazy, every time I look at it…I thought, man this is real stupid design. (somehow reminding me of that ZUNE.)
Years ago, I was able to get my hands on a pre-release copy of a major Photoshop version (5, I think). That beta had a very different (and simpler) icon and splash screen from the release version. So I think this is just following that tradition. Relax.
Ah! Here are some:

Guys, this is most definitely the final icon. Look at the “final” Adobe Reader v8 icon. It’s all the same family.
Just to clarify; the icon you have listed for 5.0 was actually used for PS 7, the first OS X native version of PS. How do I know? I still use it :)
Ditto with Tim.

Also forgot 5.5 icon, and icon for v6.0 and v7.0 too (mentioned above).
CS1 was v8.0 and CS2 was v9.0
Just updated the image but I cannot find icons for 5.5 and 6.0. I’ll add them when I find them.
Adam, your icon for v4.0 is really the icon for v5.0 and v5.5
This new icon design seems like a merge of Adobe and Macromedia styles
It’s unbelievable. In my opinion, this is the ugliest icon ever seen.
Don’t misunderstand me. I love minimal style, but this is not minimal. This is bad taste. If this will be the final icon, I will personally provide a replacement asap.
What big companies have in mind? Adobe is making a so bad icon, and Apple gived iTunes 7 a so bad appearance.
I hope this a temporary icon for Photoshop, and iTunes 7 is NOT a preview of Leopard gui.
All this makes me cry.
I like it very much. Seiously :-)
I’m gonna go ahead and say it: I like Adobe’s new icons. I like the simplicity. I see that they’re trying to tighten the suite together with these simple icons based around the palette, and I actually like it. It really doesn’t need to be flashy. That’s what we’re here for—to make the flashy stuff! :) But honestly, the icons have grown on me.
I think Adobe was trying to get away from the “Eye” icon that is firmly entrenched in the public mind as THE Photoshop icon. CS was the version that “changed it all” – as witness icon becoming a feather. But I agree that the “Periodic Table” look of the new icon is anything but preposssing. Its not downright ugly, Adobe have had better outings.
It is just ugly..
makes your dock look like a error..:op
God… Some people really need to calm down and wipe the foam from their mouths…
Anyone would think they were on about photos of Adolf Hitler. In drag. Revealing drag.
And methinks some people are just old and grumpy, and hating on change.
We all know they don’t look -that- bad. They’re not like some 5 year olds crayoning or an mspaint job. Ok, so, quite dull, but what does it matter? Are you buying it for the icon, or the fact that it is good? =P
Photoshop icons are very rare in the internet. Daily I´m seraching for professional icons for my site.
Simple works.
Where is CS 4?
Alex, this is a post from 2006…. :P
thanx you
very very nice
