“Your Daily Dose of Internet Pills.”

mad4milk asked me to do a realistic pill icon for their current hottest project mooglets. mad4milk is a team of web designer and engineer and they’re oozing with styles and master of web development.

What is mooglets?

Mooglets lets you add a large number of widgets to a page, ajax-style, configurable to suit your tastes… you can even install widgets from other Websites. World clocks, statistics checking, feed readers, flickr albums, browsers-in-browser, even chat applications.”

Somebody says he quite resembles mac osx dashboard, but he runs in your browser, so no macintosh needed.”

Give mooglets a try. They’re still in beta stage so it may crash your browser.

Construction crane is getting too rusty, it’s time to retire them.

A long overdue icon update for ThemePark which contained one of my earliest icon works. When I first designed the original ThemePark icon, I couldn’t contain my fascination with LEGO and K’nex building and it showed in final icon ;)

I’ve dumbed down the concept and modernized it for current OS look. You should see those icons in next ThemePark update soon.

More amateur icons from 2001-02.

My first “popular” icon. Stupid mistake: left arrow is covering the red aqua button when I can easily avoid that by rotating the arrow slightly.

So um, you take a feather in your hand and draw an inkwell on paper? You know this is supposed to be a text editor app?” – Messed up abstract for the win.

Ugly cut-out photo of car with overly aqualicious book. Yuck.

Everyone will have to deal with rejection at some point and here’s one of my several rejected icon designs in the past.

“Oh my, you can’t reject me! I got a smooth and beautiful metal skin.” – Probably more aqua lotion is needed.

Reason for rejection: Lack of shiny Aqua gloss.

Constant rejection is always part of the job but sometime what gets accepted and what gets rejected keeps me scratching my head with wonderment. That said, I do love being rejected sometime and two reasons for this are: You can have your own personal museum of rejected works! It’s fun sharing them to your friends. Second reason, you’re free to “reuse” them in other projects without ownership issues.

Little tidbit: Forty percent of all graphic designers leave the profession in the first two years due to constant rejections. Link

Who, me? Maybe. Read below.

I’ve been asked several times if I really did design the icons for Bare BonesYojimbo, the answer is both yes and no.

Toolbar, sidebar, etc. icons: Yes.

Various 32×32 Icons.

Main application icon (red moon with black silhouette): No.

I had several icon drafts on paper for main application icon but they did not want me to do any of them. Instead I was asked to gloss-ize a graphic file they sent me.

What I had in mind (and on paper): Continue reading…

It is recommended that you do not laugh at those icons made by me in 2000-01.

Nobody can beat the “photorealistic” magnify glass and application name inside window’s body, how brilliant is that!?

I used to go “Omg, this has to be my most detailed and beautiful icon. This icon will be the one that get Apple to hire me.” I really need to slap old Adam for even thinking about that.

Hey, what if I insert ham instead of flag, what will happen?

A simple new icon for Chax. I’m beginning to like Adium more now but I still have to use iChat most of the time for video chats and this plugin will add a lot of features to iChat such as tabbed window. This icon is my contribution to Chax developer for making an useful software.

If you want to replace the menu badge (Preview) to something more interesting, download menu-badge.tiff and put them in ~ / Library / InputManagers / Chax / Chax.bundle / Contents / Resources / Chax_main.bundle / Contents / Resources.

New Colors

Head over to Phillryu.com blog for Adiumy Icons download link.

Here’s a photoshop file if you want to play with different colors. Includes some sample colors and level control. Level is mostly used for bright color.

Incorrect icon weight on the right.

Avoid cramming the 128×128 canvas with full-size square graphic. It’ll make your dock feel heavier and not balanced.

What you’ll want to do:

Adobe CS’s icons are currently the most hated icon set and personally I’m not sure why. I thought it was a nice changes from previous icons where they are too cluttered and cheaply done. Of course, it takes time to remember which icons belong to what applications but after that they’re fairly easy to remember. I also like the fact that they’re more consistent with each others instead of giving each of them their own colors.

If you hated it, how come? Do you replace the icons with something else?
